Urban hike: Leschi Park

Image
One of the great things about Seattle is the abundance of green areas in the city proper. Part of it is because of some lucky urban planning and part of it is because of the steep terrain around town. One of those areas is Leschi Park: it is a park with a great view of Lake Washington and some steep trails inside the woods. The terrain is such that in parts of the park you can't see the city: if you didn't know better, you would think that you are far away in the mountains. In fact, it probably resembles how the whole city used to be when only the Duwamish tribe lived here. It was a typical Fall day, meaning, lots of water and leaves everywhere, but that actually made for some nice creeks and waterfalls on the way, and an interesting light on some pictures. Also noteworthy is a giant sequoia, planted almost a hundred years ago by a public gardener that has been celebrated with a plaque in front of the tree itself. Definitely not a bad place to go in the city!

Watching a Talk from Bob Woodward

Image
Yesterday Jenn and I watched a talk given by the historical journalist  Bob Woodward , which is part of a series of talks he's giving around the 50 years of the  Watergate scandal . He's a world famous journalist and, together with Carl Bernstein, revealed the Watergate scandal in the Washington Post, which would eventually lead to President Nixon's resignation from office. Since then, he has kept busy reporting and writing books about politics, including some books about former President Trump. It was interesting to see such a historical figure up close. He's actually a funny guy, and cracked some jokes during his talk. It was also cool listen to him reminiscence about some of the political figures he saw in his career, plus his opinions about current politics. He remains very sharp and clearly liked talking about his experiences as well as answering some questions from the public. In addition, it was my first time at the historical Pantages Theater in Tacoma, which lo

Short Run, a convention of short run publications

Image
I just visited Short Run, an annual convention that focuses on any kinds of publications that are published only for a short run, as the name implies. So you have all kinds of comic books, zines, artworks and an impressive array of alternative publications. I had been to one many years ago, when it was smaller, and following that the convention was suspended in 2020 because of COVID-19. It came back this year bigger and better than ever, at a much nicer space at the Fisher Pavilion in the Seattle Center, and it is great! You can see all kinds of printed materials and you can talk to some of the authors. It's almost an overdose of creativity! 😃 Plus, if you buy some of the publications here, you can help support a thriving community of artists in the Seattle region, which I believe would be great for everybody. 😊
